Signal-285 (Hi-Viz Orange) certified to EN 20471 & RIS-3279-TOM:2016

March 2019 XM Textiles polycotton fabric Signal-285 (Hi-Viz orange) has been successfully tested and certified to EN 20471 (High visibility clothing – Test methods and requirements).
Signal-285 is a polyester-cotton fabric specially designed for High-Visibility clothing of Railroad workers. Available in HighVis Orange and HighVis Yellow, the fabric increases safety on railroads due to better visibility of workers. Signal-285 is a durable fabric with lasting, crisp colour certified to EN 20471 & RIS-3279-TOM (former GO/RT 3279).

The Standard EN 20471:2013 specifies requirements for high visibility clothing which is capable of visually signaling the user’s presence. The high visibility clothing is intended to provide conspicuity of the wearer in any light condition when viewed by operators of vehicles or other mechanized equipment during daylight conditions and under illumination of headlights in the dark.

RIS-3279-TOM (formerly GO-RT 3279) is a high visibility standard that only applies to the rail industry in the UK, as opposed to the EU-Wide nature of other EN standards. The aim is to ensure that rail workers on or near the trackside are sufficiently visible to trains approaching at speed or any other traffic.

Performance requirements are included for colour and retroreflection as well as for the minimum areas and for the placement of the materials in protective clothing.
According to standard EN 20471 has been successfully passed all the following tests:

1. DETERMINATION OF COORDINATES (x,y,Y)
The chromatic coordinates must be situated within the area defined by the coordinates specified in the Standard RIS-3279-TOM:2016 point (Appendix A) and the luminance factor shall exceed 0,40 specified in the Standard RIS-3279-TOM:2016 point (Appendix A).

• Original: 0,4945 – PASS
• Y minimum: 0,4000 – PASS

 

2. DETERMINATION OF COORDINATES (x,y,Y)
The chromatic coordinates must be situated within the area defined by the coordinates specified in the Standard EN ISO 20471:2013/A1:2016 and the luminance factor shall exceed 0,40 specified in the Standard EN ISO 20471:2013/A1:2016.

• Original:0,4945 – PASS
• After testing light fastness: 0,4978 – PASS
• After 5 washing cycles at 60ºC + tumble drying: 0,5058 – PASS

 

3. COLOUR FASTNESS TO RUBBING
The limit set by the Standard EN ISO 20471:2013/A1:2016 for color fastness to rubbing is 4, in dry.

• Warp/Weft (dry staining): 4-5 – PASS

 

4. COLOUR FASTNESS TO PERSPIRATION
The limit set by the Standard EN ISO 20471:2013/A1:2016 point (5.3.2) for testing of colour fastness to perspiration, is 4 for degradation and 4 for staining

ALKALINE SOLUTION

• change in colour: 5 – PASS
• staining (cotton/polyester): 4-5 – PASS

ACID SOLUTION

• change in colour: 5 – PASS
• staining (cotton/polyester): 4-5 – PASS

 

5. COLOUR FASTNESS TO DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL LAUNDERING
The limit set by the Standard EN ISO 20471:2013/A1:2016 point (5.3.3) for testing of colour fastness to washing, is 4-5 for degradation and 4 for staining.

• change in colour: 5 – PASS
• staining (cotton): 4-5 – PASS
• staining (polyester): 4-5 – PASS

 

6. DETERMINATION OF BREAKING STRENGTH AND ELONGATION
The relative expanded uncertainty of Tensile strength resistance is ±5% assay value of the measured, for a probability of coverage of 95%.
The tensile strength of woven fabrics must resist a breaking load in both directions ≥ 100 N.

• Warp: 2700N – PASS
• Weft: 820N – PASS

Elongation

• Warp: 48.0N – PASS
• Weft: 15.5N – PASS

7. WATER VAPOUR RESISTANCE
According to the requirements of EN ISO 20471:2013+EN ISO 20471:2013/A1:2016, if the water vapor resistance is higher than 5 m2Pa/W is to be measured the thermal resistance to determinate the water vapor permeability index. The water vapor permeability index to should be ≥ 0,15.

Water vapour resistance Ret (m2Pa/W): 5.43 – PASS

 

8.DETERMINATION OF DIMENSIONAL CHANGE IN DOMESTIC WASHING AND DRYING
ISO 5077:2007 specifies a method for the determination of the dimensional change of fabrics, garments or other textile articles when subjected to an appropriate combination of specified washing and drying procedures.
Negative dimensional change indicates shrinkage
Positive dimensional change indicates lengthening
